1.5
billion Worldwide internet users by 2011.
Worldwide online population will increase from 1.1 billion users
in 2007 to 1.5 billion in 2011, representing 22% of the overall worldwide
population in that year. The rapid expansion of internet access in
the US, Canada, Japan, and Western Europe during the past decade has
produced largely mature online populations in those countries and,
as a result, they will witness comparatively slower internet growth
rates through 2011. According to Jupiter Research, North America's
share of the worldwide online population is expected to erode from
21% in 2006 to 17% in 2011. Online penetration will remain the highest
in North America, measuring 76% by 2011. Western Europe is expected
to mirror that penetration rate.

Online
shopping is gaining popularity in metros, especially Delhi and Mumbai.
Online shopping is gaining popularity in metros, especially Delhi
and Mumbai. E-commerce volumes are likely to increase by 150% to touch
Rs.5,500 crore in 2007-08 against Rs.2,200 crore in 2006-07. Changing
lifestyles and shopping habits, turning to internet for convenience
and large number of merchants becoming internet savvy are primary
reasons for pushing up e-commerce transactions in metros such as Delhi,
Mumbai and other cities like Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata. At present
the internet users population is about 120 million and it's expected
to increase to 200 million by 2008. Products commonly bought and sold
online include books, gadgets, railway tickets, apparel, gifts, computer
and peripherals, airline tickets, music, movies, magazines, home appliances,
toys, jewellery, movie tickets, beauty products, health and fitness
products and sports items.
