A Domain Name is the essence of your
company's online identity. It is the address your customers
use to find information about your products and services on
the web. It is your permanent address that can follow you
no matter where in the world you might move. This is a very
powerful tool for individuals as well as businesses.
Domain names allow Internet users to type in a website name,
such as www.FutureNetTechnologies.com, to identify a numeric
Internet Protocol (IP) address such as 203.199.107.106. The
purpose of Domain name is to allow users connected to the
Internet the ability to find web sites without having to memorize
the long, numerical (IP) addresses that actually locate the
computers or servers on the Internet.
A domain name is the part of your Internet address that comes
after “www”. For example, in www.futurenettechnologies.com
the domain name is “futurenettechnologies.com”.
Why you need your own domain when you can
use some one else’s domain. For eg: www.futurenettechnologies.com/freeserver/clients/users/yourname/.
Is buying Your Own Domain Really Necessary? The answer is
YES. Why the big deal?
Firstly, you want your visitors to trust you right? Having
your own domain name registered emphasizes that trust. TRUTH.
It will look more professional and will create a lot more
credibility for your company.
Secondly, others domain name are hard to remember, hard to
spell and difficult to say in one breath. That is why for
a your business I recommend getting your own domain name.
Thirdly having you own domain gives you complete control over
what appears and doesn’t appears on your site.
A domain name can have a maximum of 67 characters including
the extensions (.com, .net, etc). A domain name can contain
numbers, letters or dashes. A domain cannot start or end with
a dash. A domain name consists of two or more words separated
by a period. The last word (the far right) is called a "top-level
domain". Here are some common top-level domains and their
use:
| 1 |
.COM |
Used for commercial entities. It is the
most popular top-level domain. Anyone can register a
.com domain. |
| 2 |
.NET |
Originally used for networking
organizations such as Internet Service Providers and
backbone providers. |
| 3 |
.ORG |
Designed for miscellaneous organizations, including
non-profit groups. Today, anyone can register a .org
domain. |
| 4 |
.EDU |
Four-year, accredited colleges and universities. |
Other top-level domains include those for countries (.CA
for Canada, .UK for the United Kingdom, .HK for Hong Kong,
etc.), which are based on the International Standards Organization's
3166 standard for country abbreviations.
To the left of the top-level domain is what is called the
"second-level domain." In futurenettechnologies.com,
"futurenettechnologies" represents a second-level
domain within the top-level domain of .com.
It is also possible to have a domain name in the form of
something.futurenettechnologies.com. In this case the "something"
is called a "host" name or a "sub-domain".
It is not necessary to register a host or sub-domain with
a registry before being able to use it.

Internet users are increasingly logging online to do
routine tasks. Utility services such as bill payment,
ticketing, banking which were earlier done manually
(even by internet users) have shifted to the internet
now. The popularity of entertainment activities such
as online gaming, video downloads has increased and
so has the share of entertainment in the main applications
used online. Information as a segment has seen a decline
as much of the information is in English. As more and
more content is generated in regional languages this
segment will see growth. While in 2006 there were 21.1
million active internet users, in 2007 about 32 million
were active net users. |

PC literacy has shown a steady year-on-year growth.
There has been a 10% growth in PC literacy in 2007 over
2006. Around 70% of Indians who know how to operate
a computer have used internet at least once in their
lives, which is a very healthy sign of internet growth
in the country. Though there is still a gap between
computer literates, internet users and active internet
users. Of the total internet users around 70% are glued
to the virtual world and use internet on a regular basis.

There are over one billion internet users worldwide
and most of them use Internet Explorer to surf the online
world. In Q4 2007, Firefox has a 15.84% share of browser
usage, compared with 77.37% for Internet Explorer, according
to Net Applications, which tracks visitors to about
40,000 websites. Usage share for web browsers is the
percentage of visitors to a group of sites that use
a particular browser. For instance, if Internet Explorer
has 77.37% usage share, it means that Internet Explorer
is used by 77.37% of visitors that visit a given set
of sites. Typically, the user agent string is used to
identify which browser a visitor is using. |

INTERNET according to a recent survey of internet users,
youth form the maximum usage category and not surprisingly
all the sticky applications (like mail, chat, mobile
VAS portals) present today focus on the youth. Another
major segment surfing the internet comprises school
kids, says the IMRB-IAMAI survey.
In the survey of 32 million active internet users in
30 cities across India, there has been an unexpected
decrease in the share of older men and non-working women
in the Internet user pie. This might be due to the lack
of sticky applications for this segment and greater
growth rates of other segments, clouding out growth
in this market. |

DID
YOU KNOW? |
A study that estimates how much digital information
the world is generating finds that - for the first time
- there's not enough storage space to hold it all. The
report sought to account for all the data that make
up photos, videos, emails, web pages, instant messages,
phone calls and other digital content. The researcher
also assumed that each digital file gets replicated
three times. That would equal to 161 exabytes - capacity
of 2 billion 80GB iPods or like 12 stacks of books that
each reach from earth to the sun. Or you might think
of it as 3 million times the information in all books
ever written. |
